Where To Begin Cleaning When Your Overwhelmed By A Messy Home.

Trying to keep a clean home is a chore all in itself, especially if you have multiple children at home. Most often, we don’t know where to even begin when our homes are destroyed. But the more you put off cleaning, the larger the mess becomes.

I have learned to discipline myself over the many years of being a mom and now can identify where my hot spots/high traffic areas are and where I need to begin cleaning when my home is a complete wreck. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still usually a everyday mind struggle festering up the motivation to actually just start cleaning because let’s be honest, there are a million other things we’d rather be doing…

Today I will be sharing what I’ve learned over the years of being a stay at home mom. And where you should begin cleaning when your home is already trashed. The bright side is once you get your home under control, you will be able to implement a simple daily cleaning routine. When you have a cleaning routine in place everyday this helps you maintain your home’s appearance and is easier to keep tidy.

By doing these cleaning tasks daily it will help you to maintain your home and lessen the burden of your cleaning. In return, you may even have more time for hobbies like…

Blogging, Social Media, YouTube, Reading, Crafting, Listening To A Audible Book From Audible, Listening To Blinks From Blinkist or Netflix.

Once you get your home under control, you can start by adding some cleaning tasks to your day that will help keep up with homemaking.

I will link my post right here on establishing a daily cleaning routine. Make sure to download my free instant planner download.

  • Try And Set Your Focus On Your Homes Hot Spots AKA High Traffic Areas That Are A Target For Messes.

  • Have A Space For Everything.

  • Purge Junk Mail, Papers, Paperwork & School Papers Often. Save Anything You Would Like To Look Back On As Far As Kids School Artwork.

  • Collect And Take Out Any Trash Lying Around Your Home And/Or Trashcans That Are Overflowing.

  • Collect Dirty Laundry Throughout Your Home And Bring To Laundry Room Area.

  • Make The Beds And Tidy Up Bedrooms. I like to spray some sort of Fabric Refresher on the sheets and blankets.

  • Do A House Walk. Grab Your Planner, Notebook Or Even Scrap Paper, Go Into Every Room In Your Home, Write Down Everything That Needs Cleaning Room By Room.

  • Windex Glass. Most Importantly, Windex The Front Storm Door If That Is Glass. I’m Not Sure About Yourself, But Smudges On Glass Drive Me Insane.

  • Sprinkle Some Rug Powder And Vacuum.

  • Tidy Up Your Entry Way.

  • Make Sure You Have A Spot For Everything. Such As Book Bags, Coats, Hats, Gloves, Purses and Hoodies.

  • Hang Large Wooden Planks W/ Hooks, I Use One At Each Side, One For BackPacks And The Other For Coats And Hoodies. Also, I Like To Use A Wooden Crate For Winter Hats And Gloves. Lastly, I Use A Smaller Multi Hook Higher Up For My Boys Baseball Caps. This Area Is A Life Saver Now That It’s Free Of Clutter & Chaos. Here are the plank hooks I use in my entry area.

  • Clear Off And Purge Tables/ Surfaces Throughout Your Home.

  • Fold Laundry Right From The Dryer And Put It Away.

  • Pick Up/Put Away Any Toys Lying Around.

  • Take Breaks, Set A Timer For 10-20 Minute Increments.

  • Wipe Down Bathroom Sinks And Toilets With Lysol Disinfecting Wipes.

  • Empty Kitchen And Bathroom Trash, Collect Any Trash Lying Around. Take Out.

  • Hydrate Yourself Throughout The Day. I Suck At Drinking Water, It Does Help Though All Around.

  • If You Take Something Out, Put It Away Right After.

  • Fill Up A Bucket With Warm Water And Lysol & Mop Your Walls. My Preference For A Mop And Bucket Is The Hurricane Spin Mop/Bucket System. Does The Best Job Mopping Painted or non Painted Walls .

  • If You Have Any Small Nail Wholes In Your Walls, Use A White Crayola Crayon And Rub Against Nail Whole Back And Forth Until Covered.

  • Take The Light Fixtures Down On The Ceilings Within Your Home And Wash Them With Warm Water And Dish Soap. Hand Dry, Windex If You Would Please. Rehang.

  • If You Have A Top Loading Washing Machine With A Fabric Softener Dispenser In The Middle, Take The Dispenser Cap Off. If You Never Did This Before, Beware It’s Really Nasty. Clean The Parts Really Good, Run Warm Water Through The Dispenser. Your Going To See Tons Of Black Gook, That’s Good. Run Your Washer Without Any Clothes And See The Difference.

Just remember to go at your own pace. I can’t tell you how many times I went on a cleaning frenzy to crashing for a week or sometimes even more. Your best bet is to do a little bit everyday. That will help keep your home in some type of order.

The key to a tidy home is consistency and doing a little bit each day.

My biggest advice for you before I wrap this post us is to start with the simplest tasks. I know others say to knock out your biggest task first thing in the morning, but some of us struggle with finding the motivation to just start. So keep that in the back of your mind and do what is best for you.

Usually once you start cleaning, the motivation sustains itself and you will want to keep cleaning. This is coming from someone who is a chronic procrastinator. If I can manage to get my home somewhat tidy, I know you can too.
